Car payments are on the move with Nordea Connect

The car dealership company Din Bil introduced a car collect, repair and return service to reduce the need for customers to drop off vehicles themselves. Nordea Connect provides an easy way for customers to pay online for the new service.

Nordea Connect is a Nordic online payments platform that directly connects business owners to the full value chain of Nordea’s solutions and advisory services. Find out more about Nordea Connect at nordeaconnect.com.

Owned by Volkswagen’s Porsche Holding Salzburg, Din Bil (translated as ‘Your Car’ in English) is one of the largest car dealerships in the Nordics, repairing and selling Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, Skoda and SEAT vehicles at locations spread across Sweden.

Traditionally, Din Bil customers taking their cars for a maintenance check-up would drop them off at the nearest service centre, returning to collect them at a later date once repairs have been completed. When collecting the car, customers would pay for repairs with their debit or credit cards.

Offering a full service

As part of a long-term digital payments project, Din Bil were in the process of assessing ways of simplifying and expanding their offering of mobile payment options to their customers. With coronavirus social distancing causing a sudden restriction in people’s movements, Din Bil rapidly adjusted their operating model to makes sure they could still offer a full service to their customers.

200515 Din Bil 1Marcus Sundberg, Head of Group Accounting at Din Bil Sweden, says: “A new way of working that developed this year is our collect and deliver car maintenance service. We are one of the largest car repair organisations on the market in Sweden and we wanted our customers to know that if they can’t come to us, we’ll come to them. We have been looking at payments for some time but when the situation changed very quickly we needed to adopt a payment solution as soon as possible that supported our new service.”

Damon Amoui, Head of Commercialisation at Nordea Connect, says: “Nordea was asked to quickly put together a solution that would enable the Din Bil sales team to accept payments at a distance when dropping off the cars. Nordea’s new PSP (Payment Service Provider) solution Nordea Connect proved to be an ideal option as it removed the need for carrying around large bulky card terminals. Being able to accept mobile payments via cards, Apple pay or Swish would be a much more convenient way of doing it.”

Pay at the drop off

The new payment solution for Din Bil needed to work without making any technical integrations to Din Bil’s existing web platform. Thanks to a Nordea Connect feature known as ‘payment links’, the Din Bil team are now able to go into the Nordea Connect admin portal, generate a payment link and then email that payment link directly to a specific customer to make a payment.

200515 Din Bil 2Charlotta Andersson, Global Cash Management Adviser at Nordea, says: “The new solution took two to three weeks from our first dialogue to get up and running. In record time, we have been able to introduce a short term solution that completely removes the need for an actual integration. We hope to expand the offering into a fully-fledged integrated solution after a few months. Nordea Connect gives Din Bil customers one single point of entry and one simple way of paying whether they prefer to use Swish, their cards or Apple Pay. Our flexible solution is able to co-exist alongside other consumer financing options offered by Din Bil. We were also able to adapt the solution to meet the needs of Din Bil by making it compatible with their existing card acquiring arrangement.”

Marcus adds: “In one simple set up, Nordea Connect allows us to offer all of the popular payment options that our customers want to use. Swish is of course very important in Sweden and needed to be included. It’s also very good with Nordea’s solution that there are no negative effects on our cashflow as we receive money either the same day if it’s a Swish payment or the next day if it’s paid with card. One of the most important factors for us when choosing a PSP is the low transactional cost. By being flexible and proactive, the Nordea team were able to link our card acquiring solution to Nordea Connect, which helps us to maintain low transactional costs.”

Knowing who to call

Nordea’s relationship with the Volkswagen Group and its subsidiaries in the Nordics stretches back a number of years. This relationship provided a good basis for finding a quick and efficient solution to meet Din Bil’s needs.

200515 Din Bil 3aMarcus continues: “Nordea were responsive, fast and very professional. We are a large company and they were able to swiftly implement a solution that needed to function for several hundred people. We have a strong relationship based on mutual trust. With Nordea standing behind this solution, we were confident they would be able to meet an urgent business need and act quickly.”

Peter Jez, Client Executive at Nordea, says: “An important reason why we were able to come up with a solution together is because we have known each other for a long time. We understood very quickly what Din Bil were looking for. When Din Bil needed a partner to discuss mobile payments and to get it up and running quickly they knew who to call based on our strong relationship.”

Expanding the offering

Nordea Connect also enables Din Bil customers still visiting service centres to pre-pay for the repairs, making the collection process more efficient.

Marcus says: ”We also have another use for Nordea Connect, which we believe will have an even bigger impact for our customers. Some customers are still coming to our workshop and we expect that number to return to normal levels in the future. Usually they would drop off their car in the morning, receive a message from us that the work is completed and return at the end of the day and make a payment on-site before collecting their car. Now we can also send a payment link at the same time as we send the collection message and the customer can pay using whichever method they prefer. Now they only need to pick up the key when they arrive and drive off, without going through the hassle of making a payment. The whole customer experience is also changing.”

In the future, Nordea Connect will potentially also be expanded to accept payments for the car sales side of Din Bil’s business.

Marcus adds: “Now mobile payments are working well for customers with maintenance and repair needs, we are already looking into implementing it in our car market as well. When you buy or lease a car you need to make an initial payment and this could also be linked into our digital payments system to make things more convenient for our customers.”

The solution has also gained the attention of the rest of Porsche Holding Salzburg, putting mobile payments firmly on the agenda.

Marcus concludes: “Our parent company back in Austria are very curious about what is happening in Sweden because Sweden is already known for being ahead when it comes to digital payments. It’s very interesting for them and they are asking us lots of questions at about this project.”
