Nordea at World Water Week 2018

This year’s World Water Week in Stockholm has come to an end, but new ideas and connections have just started. Nordea was present at this important event with representatives from Group Sustainable Finance and co-hosted an event on “Tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through safe, clean water and environmental health”. Problems, solutions and incentives were discussed, and light was shed on an area that is receiving far too little attention.

Nordea co-hosted an interactive seminar during World Water Week together with SIANI, Stockholm Environmental Institute and SIWI. Experts were invited from different disciplines to discuss solutions and how safe Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) can contribute to good health.

Carl-Fredrik Flach, professor at the University of Gothenburg, opened the seminar as keynote speaker and emphasized the role of the environment in evolution and surveillance of antibiotic resistant bacteria, underlining that action is needed.

After Carl-Fredrik’s presentation Annika Nordin, SLU, Mark Sprenger, WHO, Damiano de Felice, Access to Medicine Foundation, Steven Hoffman, Global Strategy Lab started a discussion in breakout sessions with all participants of the seminar. Nordea participated in the discussions together with manufactures and procurers. Problems, solutions and incentives were thoroughly discussed and presented.

Other highlights from World Water Week 2018

Nordea also participated in a panel on water risk assessments hosted by the World Wide Fund and World Resources Institute and spoke at the CEO Water Mandate Annual Multi-Stakeholder Meetingtogether a variety of experts from the private sector, civil society, governments, and UN agencies.

H.E Amina J Mohamed, Deputy Secretary General, UN was a real highlight on the World Water Week 2018. She emphasized the connection between the SDGs (The UN Sustainable Development Goals) in relation to water and raised the question of how we in terms of water issues get to implementation of scale. Businesses needs to understand the benefits of water. She underlined that World Water Week is an important opportunity to recommit ourselves to address many issues to build more momentum by bringing together many more technical experts of different parts of our global village for the scale.

On Tuesday the 28th of August professors Bruce Rittmann and Mark van Loosdrecht won 2018 Stockholm Water Prize for pioneering microbiological research and innovations that have revolutionized water and wastewater treatment. The Stockholm Water Prize is a global award founded in 1991 and presented annually by Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) to an individual, organization or institution for outstanding water-related achievements. H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden is patron of the prize.

What is AMR?

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the ability of a microorganism (like bacteria, viruses, and some parasites) to stop an antimicrobial (such as antibiotics, antivirals and antimalarials) from working against it. As a result, standard treatments become ineffective, major surgery and cancer chemotherapy is compromised, and infections persist and may spread to others.
