Nordea visits the world’s most sustainable city

In early April 2019 Sasja Beslik, Head of Sustainable Finance at Nordea, travelled to Abu Dhabi's Masdar City in the UAE - one of the world's most sustainable urban communities. In the heart of the hot desert, a sustainable oasis of a city has emerged.

The construction of Masdar City began in 2008, as a collaboration between WWF and the UAE’s government, with the vision of planning a city in a truly sustainable way. A place free of carbon dioxide emissions, waste and cars. A city where consideration for climate and social sustainability are core elements in every aspect of life. From the way food is grown, infrastructure and transportation, heating and cooling of buildings to the supply of energy to the city’s citizens, relocation and preservation of species.

As investors, we are in continuous search of sustainable solutions that are scalable and bring hope for the future. By 2050, 55% of the world’s population will live in huge, largely unsustainable mega-cities. Places like Masdar City revolutionise how we look at cities and show that there are indeed better options; that it is possible to plan entire cities based on a sustainability perspective,” says Sasja Beslik.

He stresses that developing new types of urban communities is not merely an environmentalist’s dream, but an absolute necessity for humans to sustain over the next 100 years. Masdar City’s vision for urban development is based on economic, social and environmental sustainability while offering the highest quality of life with the lowest environmental footprint.
